F1: Mercedes opens 2015 season in front row at Australian GP

Lewis Hamilton will be opening his title defense in pole position as the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team claimed its first front-row lockout after Saturday’s qualifying session for the Australian Grand Prix. The 2014 drivers champion relatively easily beat out teammate Nico Rosberg, 1:26.327 to 1:26.921, in action reminiscent of the majority of last season’s give and take between the two in-team rivals. Behind the Mercedes cars, other teams were close in Q3. Felipe Massa (1:27.718) continued where he left off in 2014 with a great qualifying to start the new season. His Williams will start in P3, followed by the Ferrari cars. New Scuderia driver Sebastian Vettel looks like he’s back in form after a change… Continue Reading »

F1 2015: Mercedes concludes Barcelona testing with mixed results

After four days of rigorous testing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team was able to complete a total of 444 laps over the track, allowing drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to get some significant run in the new F1 W06 hybrid. Day four saw Rosberg post a second-best lap time of 1:24.321 and a total of a whopping 131 laps. His time was eclipsed only by the Lotus of Romain Grosjean, who tallied 111 laps with a best time of 1:24.067. That was great performance on a day that Rosberg considered ‘difficult’, what with ongoing troubles with getting the tires to work properly… Continue Reading »

Mercedes to unveil 2015 F1 car on February 1; could come with 2015-spec F1 power unit after all

While there has been speculation that Mercedes could simply use the superbly designed 2014 power unit for the first few races of the 2015 season and just upgrade it through the course of the season given the new rulings handed out by the FIA on engine development, new reports have surfaced that say those rumors are not true and that Mercedes is already hard at work to bring a fresh power unit by the first test at Jerez on February 1. The Jerez test will also be an opportunity to showcase the new car for 2015, the F1 W06 Hybrid. We will be seeing Nico Rosberg at the wheel on the… Continue Reading »

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton is your 2014 F1 champion

In the end, the epic battle to decide who will be the ultimate Formula 1 driver for the 2014 season simply did not materialize. There would be no showdown, no gut-wrenching finish, as Nico Rosberg encountered technical problems at the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which meant that Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton had a clear path to victory. Hamilton took the race win and the driver’s championship, which was his to lose in the first place with a 17-point lead entering the event. This made Hamilton the first Mercedes team driver to claim an F1 title since Juan Manuel Fangio did so back in 1955. Hamilton also became the fourth British double-champion in history,… Continue Reading »
