Replacement fortwo Loses Its Renault Diesel

Back in late 2010, it was reported that Daimler and Renault-Nissan had signed an agreement to share drivetrains, with the agreement seeming to benefit the French-Japanese alliance more, as they would have had access to AMG’s engines. But other reports then came to light that Daimler’s smart division would be using Renaults miserly turbodiesel for the replacement fortwo. This is not to be, however, as a British magazine says that Renault has reportedly backed out of the deal. That the French car industry is in the doldrums is not news anymore, and so it’s not surprising to learn that the reason Renault is giving is a more restrictive R&D budget…. Continue Reading »

‘Smart Buggy’ Bid for 2013 Dakar Rally Fails

It’s never a good thing when a dream fizzles out, and it can hurt much more considering we’re about to say goodbye to 2012 as well. That’s just what Jose Luis Alvarez has to deal with as he bids his 2013 Dakar Rally bid goodbye. Alvarez and his team was set to take a couple of smart ForTwos to the rally. These are definitely heavily modified to perform on a rally competition and to comply with FIA rules for said event, and many would argue that perhaps the vehicles are merely rally cars with a smart shell, but it’s still a smart, anyway. Right now, though, all that is moot…. Continue Reading »

Spied: Is car2go headed to Seattle?

One of our readers just sent us a bunch of spy images of a bunch of smart cars in car2go livery lying in a lot in the Seattle area. Is it possible that Daimler’s own carsharing service is headed to Seattle? After all, the city is the largest in the US Pacific Northwest region and has a metropolitan area that has around 3.5 million people—perfect for services like car2go. Of course, we know there’s a car2go service already up and running north of the border, in Vancouver, Canada. There’s still a good chance that these smart units are headed for that region, but with a complement of already 325 units… Continue Reading »

Smart fortwo Protects Its Passenger, According to ADAC Test

It is just usual that when a small car crash with a big car, the smaller one get pressed hard – or so we thought. In the standard crash test, vehicles with the same weight are being stimulted to collide with each other. However, the most recent ADAC test made four smaller vehicles crash into a vehicle as big as a lower end midsized car. Surprisingly, it showed that the smart car despite being the lightest and smallest vehicle, can avoid the most common injury – the life threatening injury in the chest. According to Daimler’s website, they attribute the crash test success to these safety concepts: The tridion safety… Continue Reading »
