GLK Diesel To Be Made Available In The U.S.

2013 glk GLK Diesel To Be Made Available In The U.S.

Acknowledging that diesels are making inroads in terms of acceptability in one of the world’s largest markets, Mercedes-Benz of North America is planning to introduce a diesel GLK, concurrent with its plans to also introduce a diesel-powered C-Class. Today’s crop of diesel engines are far removed from their predecessors, which deserved their reputation as oil burners with their unmistakable clatter. Nowadays, diesel engines rival gasoline engines in terms of smoothness and power generation, while significantly offering higher levels of fuel efficiency with much lower harmful emissions.

For the 2013 model year, Mercedes’ GLK diesel model will sport a 2200 cc common rail engine with an output of 170 hp and almost 300 lb-ft of torque. To be known as the 220 CDI 4Matic, this CUV has already passed US emission laws. With the increased acceptance of diesels, Mercedes-Benz North America head Steve Cannon looks forward to sales figures in the “high 30s”, as opposed to the previous year’s sales of 24,300 units.

After Daimler and BAIC’s agreement to expand their partnership in China with more projects, Mercedes- Benz announced that the first China-made GLK SUV will be rolled off in the Beijing Plant on Monday.

Ulrich Walker, Chairman of Daimler Northeast Asia commented, “Nothing represents our long-term commitment to China more tangibly than the production of vehicles in China itself: The localized production of further Mercedes-Benz models is an important element of our growth strategy for the Chinese market.”

This is the third model that China will be producing, the first ones are the C-Class and E-Class and more will be added until 2015, and they estimate to sell more than 300,000 more until then. The car manufacturer was already able to sell 168,940 vehicles in China, that is, only from January to November 2011.

In a report about the joint venture with Beijing Benz Automotive Co, Ltd., it was revealed that the GLK SUV will be locally produced in China. Currently, words are spreading that the vehicle will be equipped with a 3.0L V6 engine for the top end model.

This is in line with Mercedes-Benz’ goal of pushing the brand from this year until 2012 to be at par with the fast-paced Audi. Introducing a new range of China-made vehicles, the company aims to cater to a wider market by lowering their prices. This will be made possible by making cars in the country thus avoiding high import taxes and also allow customers to compare auto insurance for greater deals. Other than that, the parts will be sourced locally so the price of the Mercedes-Benz cars will be significantly reduced.

As shown in the photo from Mercedes- Benz China, the locally made GLK has minor changes in the front end, however this is no big deal as it still shows similarity with the imported version. The price of Mercedes-Benz GLK in China is expected to range from300,000 yuan (about $46,500) to 450,000 yuan (about $70,000) when it launches in the first quarter of 2012.

Insider Info: Mercedes-Benz Survey asks which of these models do you want in the U.S.?

Potential New Vehicles from 597x397 Insider Info: Mercedes Benz Survey asks which of these models do you want in the U.S.?

Concerned loyalists of Mercedes-Benz, kindly be aware of a survey Mercedes-Benz has conducted in its efforts to involve a certain group of individuals in its business plans. The survey, as seen in the photo above, asks several questions on models which the company considers for entry into the U.S. market. Our Insider was not only kind enough to send us a picture of the survey that was handed out but also some information about the mentioned models and their release dates.

The models involved in the survey are the following:

  • The CLC-Class 4-door Coupe
  • The GLK, whose next generation is pegged for 2013, will increase its physical dimensions apart from receiving a 300-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. A diesel variant of the E250 BlueTEC which, according to Mercedes-Benz, boasts a 40 miles-per-gallon fuel economy rating.
  • The 2014 GLC (pegged as the mini GLK) will somewhat be smaller, shorter and lower than the GLK variant. Its rumoured powerplant is a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that’ll churn around 210 horsepower through its 4-Matic all-wheel drive system.
  • Last but never the least, the next generation A-Class and B-Class models set for U.S. shores in 2014.

So folks, if you want these models to ever make it into U.S. shores (we’re sure you do), then you might want to hope that those individuals that filled out that survey have the same opinion/intentions as you guys. If you also want to help out the Mercedes-Benz officials, then you are more than welcome to state your opinion and let them know what your stand is on bringing these future Mercedes-Benz models to the U.S. Market.

Facelifted GLK Caught On Camera

Not unexpectedly, a facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLK has been caught in the wild by spy photogs, with only minimal coverings to its refreshed front and rear ends. As usual, only minor updates will bedeck the facelifted GLK, such as LED running lights and headlights with more angular planes in their execution. With its fairly new design, the GLK doesn’t need a major design upgrade or facelift, in the way its older and bigger G-Class big brother needs one. With the facelifted model running down the road, the photographers were not able to catch any interior upgrades, if any.

Since the company is still mum on updates to this model, there is no official word on drivetrain upgrades. It is not beyond imagining though that Mercedes could possibly offer to GLK buyers its new direct injection V6, displacing 3.5 liters, currently found in the C350.
