New C63 AMG To Go On Sale This Summer

2012C63 New C63 AMG To Go On Sale This Summer

AMG has released official photos of the upcoming C63 in the sedan and estate forms. Officially debuting at the 2011 Geneva Salon this March, the AMG sedan and estate variants of the C63 will receive styling and performance tweaks to set it apart.

Externally, the C63 AMG will of course carry the design changes of its base brethren. However, AMG-specific parts such as restyled bumpers, grills and wheels are evident. The interior is also be differentiated with AMG trim parts.

It is in the mechanical aspects the the C63 AMG differs significantly. As befits the AMG emblem, the suspension has been massaged to provide improved handling. But the heart of the matter is in the engine, which uses the proven 6.2-liter V8, serving up 457 horsepower and 442 pounds-feet of torque from its naturally-aspirated tuning. 0-60 times are 4.5 seconds for the sedan and 4.6 for the Estate.

For this new variant, AMG is installing their new MCT 7-speed transmission. Aside from the sporty performance given by the new transmission, fuel economy is reportedly improved by 10 percent. If these performance figures are not enough, there is an optional package that boosts engine output to 487 horsepower, which drops the 0-60 times of the sedan and Estate to 4.4 and 4.5 seconds respectively.

C-Class Diesel Set To Join Other Siblings in US

A major car magazine has reported that it is Mercedes-Benz’s intention to sell a C-Class diesel in the next three years. By that 2014 date, around 8 model variants will be available with these fuel-efficient and torquey powerplants. To date, Mercedes-Benz offers the diesel engine alternative in its M, GL, R and E-Class models, with the S-Class getting its own diesel engine option late this year. Despite its formerly well-deserved rap as foul-smelling and smoky contraptions, diesels have come of age and Mercedes’ decision to increase its diesel lineup is a reflection of the acceptance that the new-generation engines have achieved.

It is likely that the C-Class diesel, when it appears, will have Mercedes’ 2.1 liter turbodiesel as its motive unit. This engine will give the C-Class 204 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet of torque. Typical of diesels, the probable mileage for this variant would be more than 30 miles per gallon. This engine is also expected to power the upcoming GLK, expected towards the last few months of this year. This would be a good engine to have for the small crossover since it will be fuel efficient and yet exude a ruggedness and practicality that most cars lack. Diesel technology has vastly improved in the last decade and they can be as quiet and powerful as gasoline units while giving significantly higher fuel economy.

There are few vehicles that can lay claim to being better than the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. In this case, it turns out to be a special limited-run Canadian edition of the vehicle dubbed the C63 AMG Affalterbach Edition. From the car’s Magno Allanite Grey color scheme to the exterior tweaks to the AMG Performance Package, it’s really a beast on four wheels.

The sheer specs of the vehicle make it worthy of the Affalterbach name, which is of course the name of the city within which Mercedes-AMG has its headquarters. What’s different in this model? For starters, the AMG P31 Development Package (worth over $6,000 when checked) comes standard instead of optional. That’s 481 hp plus 443 lb.-ft. of torque right there. It will take the vehicle 4.4 seconds to go from 0-62 mph (0-100 kph).

Aside from that upgrade, the Affalterbach Edition gets carbon-fiber mirror shells, a new lip spoler and a set of black alloy 19-inchers. Interior features include AMG sport edition seats with Nappa leather, red stitching, special-edition logos and carbon-fiber trim.

Only 30 units of this special-edition C63 AMG will be made available in Canada, and prices start from $81,500 Canadian dollars (a shade under $82,400) once the Affalterbach Edition starts sales this spring.

New C-Class Coupe Seen in U.S. Soil

Based on the 2012 C-Class sedan, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe has recently been seen on the U.S. mainland. Previously, this C-Class coupe had only been seen testing at the Nurbrugring in Germany, as a near-production prototype. This is a timely development as the previous C-Class coupe, the CLS was not successful in the U.S. This was because of dated-looking styling that did not engender itself to Mercedes’ intended market, where there are competitive and possibly better choices.

The new C-Class coupe was spotted at Mercedes’ Long Beach Vehicle Processing Center in California (with a few other soon-to-be-released models), where it will join the C-Class sedan in showrooms this year. As expected, the coupe and sedan will wear facelifted styling similar to the new E-Class, with LED daytime running lights below the headlights, with a wide, mesh-covered lower air intake below a two-bar grille. All in all, it looks like a smaller E-Class coupe.

As with the sedan, engine options would most probably be mid-displacement 3-liter sixes with 6-speed manuals and 7-speed automatics as transmission choices. Probable AMG versions would be V8 turbocharged monsters.
