Mercedes-AMG F1 Safety Cars Caught Playing On Track

Often enough, we see the silver cars of F1′s safety and medical teams going around the track whenever a race incident occurs. Long a mainstay of Formula 1, Mercedes’s AMG cars are a sight as familiar as the pit crews of the various teams. But that’s just about all we see, glimpses of F1′s safety and medical cars.

Now, the Mercedes-AMG support cars are given center stage in this video. On it, we see the C63 AMG estate that’s used as the medical car and the SLS AMG safety taking to the track at speed. And on this rare occasion, we not only get to see but hear them as well. And hearing them this way is a bit unnerving, because they sound like race cars, instead of the smooth, purring machines that we are more accustomed to when we see them on the street. If these loud exhausts are overwhelmed by the shriek of F1 cars on the telly, imagine how loud they are in real life!

SLS AMG E-Cell Goes Lightweight with a Carbon Fiber Spine

Another ambitious technology was created by Mercedes-Benz, called the “AMG Lightweight Performance”, the design is now being introduced at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. Made in an effort to upgrade crash safety, the “zero intrusion cell” protects the battery modules in the vehicle from damage and deformation in case there is a crash.

The SLS AMG E-CELL body shell being shown by Mercedes-Benz AMG at the IAA 2011 is one trailblazing outcome of its ambitious “AMG Lightweight Performance” design strategy. Its key element is a transmission tunnel made out of lightweight carbon-fibre composite material (CFRP), which is structurally integrated into the aluminium body shell and firmly bonded with it. The high-strength and stiff CFRP component helps to reduce weight, while also serving as a monocoque housing for the battery modules.

The carbon-fibre battery monocoque in the SLS AMG E-CELL forms an integral part of the body shell and acts as the vehicle’s “spine”. The advantages of carbon composite materials were specifically exploited by the AMG engineers in its design. These include their high strength, which makes it possible to create extremely rigid structures in terms of torsion and bending, excellent crash performance and low weight. CFRP components are up to 50 percent lighter than comparable steel ones, yet retain the same level of stability. Compared with aluminium, the weight saving is still around 30 percent, while the material is considerably thinner. The advantages in terms of weight achieved through the carbon-fibre battery monocoque are reflected in the agility of the SLS AMG E-CELL and, in conjunction with the highly innovative wheel-selective four-wheel drive system, ensure true driving enjoyment.

The carbon-fibre battery monocoque is, in addition, conceived as a “zero intrusion cell” in order to meet the very highest expectations in terms of crash safety. It protects the battery modules inside the vehicle from deformation or damage in the event of a crash.

Carlsson CK63 RS: Tuner’s Take on the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG

Carlsson CK63 RS Carlsson CK63 RS: Tuners Take on the Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG

Car Tuner, Carlsson, uses the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG for their newest creation, the CK63 RS.

A touch of sophistication in an impressive aerodynamic kit, that is what the CK63 RS is all about. The front spoiler lip is made of carbon fiber that adds a but of sporty look to this saloon car. The trunk lid also has carbon fiber spoiler, that gives a more stable holding even when running at high speeds.

On the other hand, the hood’s inside contains the enhances CLS AMG 63 performance package, which is now producing a 649HP and 900Nm of torque, way more than the original’s 557HP and 800 Nm. Sprint time meanwhile is 0 to 100kph in about 4 seconds. The exhaust system makes it different too, as the 4 oval end pipes give it a very different sound.

The alloy wheels of the Carlsson SLS AMG 63 kit, are made of light alloy and a combines 5-single and 5-double spokes, a trend that Germany’s Merzig is trying to start. It is also equipped with Carlsson’s patented C-Tronic SUSPENSION, an intelligent lowering system that brings the vehicle to 30mm while also monitoring the condition of the road. This controlling device adapts the residual spring travel every 150 milliseconds while also switching conditions when the speed drops to under 20kph.

Meanwhile, the interior follows the luxurious design the brand is known for. Carlsson Nappa exclusive leather line the seats and door panels. Carbon inlays in matte dark brown finish can be seen in the dashboard, center console and door panels too. Soft velour floor mat with the tuner’s logo together with brushed aluminum door pins adds to the stylish design of the car’s interior.

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG 63 is already a beauty by itself, however, thanks to Carlsson, the car was enhanced and was given a more unique appearance.

The CK63 RS will also make its world premier at the Frankfurt Auto Show, see it at Hall 5.
