Mercedes To Enter Eight Cars At Silvretta Event

With stunning mountains as a backdrop, Mercedes will, for the fourth time, be joining the Silvretta Classic and E-Auto Rallye. Set in the Montafon valley in Austria, the event will be held from July 4-7. The Silvretta event is an Alpine rally which features stages that have uphill gradients of 17 percent and downhill sprints of up to 15 percent. Add to that the winding roads that are typical of mountain passes and you can see that only well-developed cars can tackle the course. This weekend’s event is actually divided into two, one where electric cars are featured and the other showcasing  classic cars. In both events, Mercedes-Benz has ensured… Continue Reading »

Mercedes Eschews R1234yf Refrigerant In Favor Of R134a

Although even GM has come to the defense of Dupont in declaring the refrigerant R1234yf safe for use in passenger vehicles, Mercedes continues to stand by its contention that R1234yf can be flammable in certain real-world conditions. Late last year, Mercedes-Benz published the results of its tests, where a head-on collision ruptured the AC lines of the test vehicle, spewing the contents on the hot engine. This combination caused a fire which obviously left the German manufacturer uncomfortable and concerned. With these results in mind, Mercedes applied and was granted dispensation by German federal authorities to continue using the tried and tested R134a refrigerant for a few more production vehicles…. SLC Greenlighted For 2016 Release

The news out of Germany confirms that Mercedes-Benz will be releasing a Porsche 911 fighter come 2016, to be called the SLC. Despite having a lot of sporty 2-door models, Mercedes really doesn’t have a dedicated fighter to the 911, and the SLC is being aimed to be that model. Tentative pricing rumors slot the SLC between a Carrera S and a 4S. To do battle with the Porsche icon, Mercedes has announced that the SLC will be equipped with a twin turbo V8.  This engine will be a new AMG development called the M177, which will boast of an output of 485 horsepower. This engine will be first seen… Continue Reading »

Monaco Practice Session Shows Mercedes On Pace

If the results of the practice sessions are anything to go by, the current setup of both Mercedes F1 cars for Monaco should put them in podium position come the race weekend. Consistent with the pronouncements of team boss Ross Brawn leading up to this race weekend, the Mercedes team has obviously managed to get the settings right for the unique street course that is Monaco. In the free practice sessions, Nico Rosberg was consistently fastest, with a best of 1:14.759. One may say that Rosberg, a Monaco resident, had the advantage of being in his home turf. But Lewis managed second fastest time in the afternoon session, so the… Continue Reading »

2013 Monaco Grand Prix Puts Pressure On F1 Team

The weekend of May 26 will see the 71st running of the Monaco Grand Prix. In terms of glamor and prestige in the motoring world, Monaco has few equals, with its population of exotic cars and exotic people, apart from being the venue of important circuit and rallying events in the motorsports calendar. The Mercedes F1 team admittedly wants to get the sub-par performance of the Barcelona race behind them, and Ross Brawn has said that no significant updates are to be expected with the car. Rather, the focus will be on setting up the car so that the drivers will be comfortable on the relatively slow, bumpy course. Cognizant… Continue Reading »

2015 S-Class Coupe Caught In The Wild

Rumored, and expected, Mercedes’ 2015 S-Class Coupe has been caught by photographers out testing. As you can see, it’s a huge car that will be, for its future owners, an ostentatious display of wealth like the Bentley Continental and Rolls-Royce Wraith that it aims to displace. To succeed in such a function, expect this upcoming S-Class coupe to have entire cows donating their hides to the interior, with high-end wood finishes to add to the veneer of luxury and exclusivity that this vehicle brings. Based on the new S-Class platform, the coupe will make extensive use of aluminum structures, portions of which will be recycled and recyclable. We can expect… Continue Reading »
