There is a new Mercedes-Benz A-Class and we have the spy shots to show it. The prototype surprisingly revealed many of the details of the upcoming compact hatchback from Mercedes-Benz.

Based on the images, the proportions and dimensions of this 2018 year model prototype will follow exactly those of the current model, which can be seen in most of the shots. The only thing that would change proportionally is the longer wheelbase as evidenced by the stretched rear doors. As a result, we can expect more space in the cabin than ever before.

The prototype might be heavily camouflaged, but it didn’t stop us from evaluating what we might see inside this new A-Class. Designers over in the German company have integrated a central screen to the dashboard instead of simply attaching it like with the current model.

On the exterior, other changes that are worth noting are the change in positioning of the side mirrors. Whereas before they were placed higher up at the base of the A-pillars, they are now mounted on the doors. This certainly resulted to greater and better visibility for the driver.

If you noticed, there are some strange markings at the top of the windshield. These are likely sensors for a host of safety features and driver aids.

The new A-Class is expected to be the first one to use the next generation of the current Modular Front-drive Architecture, or MFA, platform used for compact cars produced by Mercedes-Benz itself and Infiniti. This platform promises weight savings and alternative drivetrains. The stretched version of the platform is rumored to be used for the next B-Class, CLA and the new SUV reportedly called the GLB.

As for the powertrain, we can expect the new A-Class to have inline-4 engines and dual-clutch transmissions. Unfortunately, as much as we like this hatchback design, it won’t be available in the US because of low demand.
