Rosberg wins Singapore GP; retakes lead over Hamilton in title race

Mercedes Nico Rosberg wins 2016 Singapore GP

Nico Rosberg won the 2016 Singapore GP, finally retaking the lead in the drivers’ championship race. With six races left this season, Rosberg has snagged the momentum from teammate Lewis Hamilton.

The win is Rosberg’s third in a row, after also winning in Belgium and in Italy. Hamilton, meanwhile, managed to finish in third place behind Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. With that difference, Rosberg takes an 8-point lead, with 273 points in total compared to Hamilton’s 265. Between them, the Mercedes drivers have won all but one of the 15 races so far in 2016.

More than Hamilton, however, Rosberg had to fend off a pesky Ricciardo, who hung on right up to the final lap of the Singapore GP.

“We knew it was going to tight at the end but we managed to hold on,” said Rosberg. “The whole car was on the edge, it always is here in Singapore.”

Ricciardo and Red Bull can take pride in the fact that they pushed Mercedes real hard and, in the driver’s words, “made things exciting.” The team is the only one apart from Mercedes to snag a race win this season, and for sure the team wanted the win tonight.

Hamilton, on the other hand, remained positive. He knows six races is still quite a long way away, and for sure the British driver will push hard starting on the next race.

“It’s been a tricky weekend for me but I’m glad to get points for my team.” Indeed, finishing at the podium is still a good achievement on any day, and it puts Hamilton in a position that’s still not too far off from Rosberg.

The next race is the Malaysian Grand Prix in a couple of weeks, on October 2nd, so be sure to tune in to that as well and check out our recap!
