The street version of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 will be called the Mercedes-AMG GT R.

In the period leading to the development of the Mercedes-AMG GT3, there were hints that its maker is also planning to release a road version of it. That sports car has been referred to as the GT3 or the Black Series lately. However, a new report suggests the car might carry the name Mercedes-AMG GT R.

As a recap, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 will serve as the replacement of the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 next season in motorsports. As its name implies, everything about it is made to comply with FIA’s GT3 regulations. The new Mercedes-AMG GT3 is lighter and has improved aero components, but it carries the same 6.2-liter V8 of its predecessor.

MotorTrend said Mercedes-AMG decided to name the souped up version of the GT S to GT R. MotorAuthority on the other hand stated the name was due to another automaker already laying claim to the GT3 moniker in its sports cars.

So what about Nissan? As we all know, the brand already has its Nissan GT-R. If the report about the Mercedes-AMG GT R is indeed true, we might expect negative reactions from the other group. But then again, there is an existing alliance between the parent companies of the two. Therefore, any kind of animosity coming out from the GT R name will likely be settled by both internally.

According to the source, the Mercedes-AMG GT R will possibly carry the 2017 model year. It adds the car’s debut will probably be in the end of 2016.
