The Mercedes-Benz Unimog is as tough as it looks. It is the reason why numerous armed forces worldwide prefer to use this behemoth for the transport of their troops and equipment in skirmishes. This month, it was revealed that the German government just approved the delivery of 40 units of its pride and joy to the northern area of Iraq. This good gesture aims to support the Kurdish Peshmerga fighters in their fight against the growing global threat brought about by the ISIL or ISIS militants.

According to DefenseNews, Chancellor Angela Merkel stated during a special session in the German parliament on September 1 that their course of action would not only help alleviate the suffering of the people in the affected area, but it is also necessary in preventing it. Thus, the expansion of the ISIS must be stopped, the head of state emphasized.

Aside from the Mercedes-Benz Unimog units, the German government would supply the fighters with weapons. Based from the website of the country’s defense ministry, it would provide 30 Milan type anti-tank weapons with 500 missiles, 40 heavy bazookas with a thousand illumination rounds, 200 light bazookas with 2,500 rounds, 40 machine guns with one million rounds, 10,000 hand grenades, G3 and G35 assault rifles with six million rounds, 8,000 pistols with one million rounds, and 100 signal pistols with 4,000 rounds.

In another report from The Times of India, protective clothing, night vision devices, helmets and other military materials were given early this month too. The first delivery using a transport plane carried around 27 tonnes of the German military stuff. An additional 600 tonnes of cargo is expected over the coming weeks.
