Are we looking at a possible rivalry for the championship between Rosberg vs Hamilton this season?

With the recent victory of Nico Rosberg in the 2014 Australian Grand Prix,  Formula One pundits  claim that we might be seeing a preview of the dominance of the team of Mercedes AMG Petronas in the races that are about to come. The F1 community appears to be heavily rooting for team Mercedes before the 2014 season even began and Toto Wolff appears to be pushing the team for the first place this time. Others even claim that it would even signal a rivalry between Rosberg vs Hamilton for the championship in the foreseeable future.

Since Lewis Hamilton jumped to Mercedes, people have been pitting him against Rosberg in F1 forums, blog and other sports publications. Well, who could blame them? Both guys are young, talented and very charismatic. On top of that, they are backed by an elite team which probably has the best car and most powerful engine in the 2014 season.

Mercedes Gives Green Light to Rosberg vs Hamilton Race

According to The Telegraph, Mercedes has allowed its young drivers to push each other to the limit before the race in Australia started. It did involve a lengthy discussion behind the scenes though. But eventually, the management of the team agreed to let the pair fight each other on the track.

The report added that another factor which led to the decision is the incident in Malaysia last season wherein Rosberg was left frustrated after he was ordered to hold his pace behind his partner.

Wolff reminded both drivers though that they are only allowed to fight on track in certain situations. The two drivers should always remember that they are both on the same team and their main competitors are the other teams. He pointed out that the team’s interest should always come first.

Rosberg Acknowledges Brewing Rivalry

During Rosbeg’s interview with the source, he admitted that he expects battles between him and the Brit later on. He stated that it is good for TV ratings and for everyone including his team.

The young German driver noted though that it comes with certain limits. Echoing what Wolff said, he explained that they cannot go crazy on each other as teammates because they are both on the same team. Their main goal still lies in putting team Mercedes in the forefront of F1.
