The third hybrid engine of Mercedes-Benz will be unveiled during the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show through the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid, according to MSN Autos. Aside from being efficient, the turbocharged V6 engine will make it the fastest hybrid S-Class in the market.
However, the electric motor of the S500 Plug-In Hybrid can be decoupled completely from its gas engine. This will make the vehicle a pure zero-emission electric vehicle, which makes it distinct from the current Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid.
The 3.0-L turbo gas engine provides 329HP and 354lb-ft of torque to the vehicle. A lithium-ion battery powers the electric motor of the vehicle. It offers 107HP and 251lb-ft of torque and is capable of providing power for around nineteen miles. However, the top speed of the all-electric mode of the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid was not revealed.
There are four operating modes for the vehicle, including the E-mode. The Hybrid mode of the vehicle combines the electric motor and gas engine. The E-Save mode will allow the vehicle to conserve the charge of the battery pack by using the turbo-six engine of the vehicle. The battery can be charged while driving through its Charge mode. The second-generation regenerative brake system of Mercedes-Benz will also be featured on the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid. Details of the battery pack and plug-in charging system have yet to be released by the luxury vehicle manufacturer.
The company revealed that the S500 Plug-In Hybrid will offer a 0 to 62 mph acceleration of 5.5 seconds. It will also offer a combined fuel consumption of at least fifty miles per gallon.
The Mercedes-Benz S300 BlueTEC Hybrid is also expected to be offered by the company. This vehicle combines a 2.2-L diesel engine offering 204HP with a 27HP electric motor. The S400 Hybrid will also be offered by the company in the US market that comes with a 306HP V6 engine and 27HP electric motor.
The Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid is a great addition to the luxury vehicle lineup of Mercedes-Benz especially with the increasing trend towards environment-friendly vehicles.
