Government purchasing a Mercedes-Benz van is like sending a wrong message to taxpayers. This is according to Gov. Chris Gregoire of Washington state, that’s why she ordered the van to be sent back to the dealer.
The van is supposed to be used to promote the state lottery as the official “lotto mobile”. The officials of the state lottery office planned to drive the van across the country to increase the sales of the tickets.
“The idea that the state is purchasing a Mercedes-Benz to drive around the state, retrofitting it to $95,000 price tag is just not appropriate,” the governor said in an interview. But the state officials believe that even though the van will cost $125,000 initially, including the cost, they will be able to recoup that investment in a short time.
But again, the governor said that the Mercedes emblem on a government vehicle may be too much.
Mercedes-Benz Lynnwood has not yet confirmed whether the state will get all of its money back.
