Cognizant of the fact that utility vehicles don’t always travel on paved roads, Mercedes has announced that its vans and large-capacity vehicles are available with all-wheel drive. These include the Vito, Sprinter, Vario or Viano. According to Daimler, ”The comprehensive range offered by the all-wheel-drive quartet from Mercedes-Benz Vans covers the complete spectrum from comfortable large-capacity vehicle to sturdy large-volume van.”
Of the four, three are available with Mercedes’ 4ETS Electronic Traction System. The vans feature permanent all-wheel drive and automatic transmissions. Four cylinder CDI diesel engines ranging from 136 hp to 163 hp are available with the standard BlueEfficiency package. Aside from these, the Sprinter 4×4 is also available with a V6 power plant with 190 hp and 325 lb.-ft. of torque, in case power is more important than fuel efficiency. The workhorse Vario is available in a 7.5-ton high-payload version that has mechanical interaxles and interwheel differential locks.
