Although being in the top levels of luxury car manufacturing is an exclusive and status-laden domain, it is not always as lucrative as the mother companies would like it to be. Daimler itself experienced this with its underperforming Maybach division, which it hoped to tap in battling Bentley and Rolls-Royce, whose ownership is in the hands of rivals Volkswagen and BMW.

It has already been reported here that Aston and Daimler were in discussions on the possibilities of a tie-up, specifically tapping into Aston-Martin’s experience in small production runs. Now, there seems to be a confirmation of such a cooperative venture, where Daimler would entrust the production of the next-generation Maybach to Aston, which would use its facilities in Gaydon, England. In return, Aston would gain access to Daimler’s technology, most specially in platforms and drivetrains, but also in other areas. Aston would benefit from these technologies in building the new Lagonda and a possible crossover vehicle.

Not a lot of details have emerged about this cooperation, however, and it remains to be seen whether Daimler will provide a whole platform or just extend aid in developing one.

Wimmer Upgrades Give C63 AMG 600 Horsepower

German tuner Wimmer continues to tinker with Mercedes’ C63 AMG with the introduction of new upgrades for the car. Although Wimmer had introduced tuning options for the C63 AMG previously, the recently-announced upgrades are a further refinement. Horsepower is now a shade over 600, with a corresponding increase in torque to 531 lb.ft. Compare this to the original 6.3 liter engine, which had an original output of 450 horsepower driving the 7G-Tronic SpeedShift gearbox. Even the limited-edition 2011 C-Class DR520 falls short of Wimmer’s mods, being rated at 520 hp and 480 ft.lb of torque.

To get to this level, Wimmer reworked the cylinder heads, installed sport camshafts, optimized the air intake and replaced the exhaust system with a custom manifold, sport catalytic converters and stainless steel piping all the way to the mufflers. All these mods will set you back around $28,000, but 600 horsepower does not come easily, specially with an engine that already comes highly-tuned from the factory.

For another $5,000, you can order a wheel and tire combo made up of 19-inch BBS CH-R alloy wheels and sticky Dunlop tires.

According to sources from Mercedes-Benz, all models in the automaker’s upcoming C-Class vehicles will possess hybrid technology. This is a bold move that is in line with the company’s aim to lower the average fuel consumption on their vehicles—practically bringing it down to the likes of those seen from superminis.

This hybrid-toting C-Class line is expected to launch officially by late 2013. The demanding targets for CO2 emission levels necessitates the move to include such technology in all of the models in the range. Some sources say that there’s one diesel model that is eyeing 100g/km for its average emission target. There will be a petrol model that is targeting something between 110 and 120 g/km.

Downsized power plants, hybrid transmissions, reduced friction in the wheel bearings, gearbox and engine, and reduced overall vehicle weight are all keys to achieving the lofty emissions targets of the upcoming C-Class vehicles. Some early prototypes are already undergoing testing.

Wheels are one of the best ways to stamp your individualism on a car and sometimes, a good set of exclusive wheels is all it takes to set your car apart from the crowd. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a car that is already exclusive by its very nature and you don’t really have to change anything on the car. Except that when you see the new wheel design for the SLS AMG from Lorinser, you will seriously consider fitting this on your SLS AMG should you have one.

Even without seeing the wheels, you’ll realize that they must be extra special based on the specs alone. For one, the wheels are sized 9.5×20-inch for the fronts and 11×21-inch for the rear one. Lorinser recommends that the owner fits 275/30 front and 295/25 tires rear tires. Designated the RSK8, these wheels are three-piece forged units composed of a 7-spoke design. The pieces are fit together using stainless steel bolts. Lorinser further boasts that these wheels are one of the lightest available and as any enthusiast will know, reduced unsprung weight, such as wheels, considerably improve a vehicle’s handling performance.

The rumor mill was abuzz with reports that Mercedes-Benz is about to unleash a bunch of debuts destined for the 2011 New York International Auto Show that runs from April 22 through May 1 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. Rumors have it that the public will be treated to a trio of vehicles that we haven’t seen yet, plus another three vehicles making their North American debuts.

The latter three are the C-Class Coupe, C-Class sedan, and the new SLK. Meanwhile, the three unknowns are believed to include a couple of AMG variants plus an entirely-new concept vehicle. What could the AMG units be? Perhaps it’s going to be the all-new SLS AMG Roadster. The logical choice is, of course, the C63 AMG Coupe.

Some people speculating on the last unknown vehicle to be unveiled say that it’s likely to be the upcoming B-Class or even the successor to the M-Class line. It’s only a matter of time before we see which it really will be. Stay tuned for more info right here at BenzInsider!
