car2go and smart have currently presented a new lineup of cars, a blue and white smart fortwo that will be manufactured at the smart plant in Hambach, Lorraine, as a fully-modified “car2go edition”. The car2go edition is adapted with the latest telematics hardware, a fresh control unit with touchscreen, and a solar roof produced solely for the smart.
The latest technology is fully equipped into the car both visually and technically. With regards to the car key, which was formerly stored in the glove compartment, is now securely kept in the system’s latest control unit. Also included are slots up to a maximum of four chip cards.
The telematic unit is hooked directly with the automobile’s electronics, meaning it can also manage the immobilizer: when the client begins the rental process with his or her access authorization and keys in a PIN number, the immobilizer is switched off and later, once the rental is through, it is at once again enabled.
As with the solar roof, it is totally integrated in the on-board electrics. The solar energy is utilized to give power to the telematics, and also to continually charge the vehicle’s battery.
According to Dieter Zetsche, Daimler CEO and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, “car2go is now well established in Ulm, Germany, and Austin, USA as an innovative alternative means of transport around the city. In future, to support the international roll-out of out mobility concept, we will be producing the world’s first series produced car sharing vehicle, the car2go edition, at out smart plant in Hamback. In this way, Daimler is once again highlighting its leading role in innovative urban mobility.”
