GM nominates the R-Class for North American Car of the Year

Daimler AG and General Motors were once tied together in a partnership that didn’t quite go as planned. Back then, too many things were at stake and both companies realized that they didn’t make the perfect team. But now, things look better between the two car manufacturing giants, especially with GM’s nomination of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class for this year’s North American Car of the Year award.

The award is exclusive in the United States. Why? Because it isn’t bested by just one media company. An entire organization of automotive magazine, television, radio, newspaper and online journalists from the US and Canada team up to find suitable candidates for nomination.

This is the 18th year that the body will be giving out the award. Mercedes-Benz was once nominated this year as well for the E-Class model line, but didn’t quite make it to the top spot.

This news is confirmed by none other than Mercedes-Benz of Long Beach, a company which strives to give the highest amount of quality service in all of its departments as well as keep their prices competitive. MB Long Beach has a highly able sales staff, factory-trained service and parts experts, as well as their immense selection of new and Certified Pre-Owned vehicles.

So will the R-Class win the prestigious award next year? Only time will tell. For now, stay tuned for more updates here at BenzInsider.

Brawn confident on Schumi’s return next season

dmk1003fe126 597x398 Brawn confident on Schumis return next season

Despite having individual winning elements—seven time world champion Michael Schumacher, constructor’s champion Brawn GP, technical genius Ross Brawn, and factory support of German premium car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz, the Mercedes GP Petronas team still falls short of coming up with a winning formula for this season’s Grand Prix.

It’s no secret that Schumi’s comeback wasn’t quite as strong as expected. He’s tenth overall right now in the Driver’s Championship standings with a mere 46-point tally. This leads fans to speculate as to whether he will be back for 2011, or let alone finish off the season’s remaining grand prix races.

According to Ross Brawn, however, Schumi will in fact stay for next season, and will race for the rest of 2010. Brawn admits that Schumi is disappointed, but the German loves racing so much that he comes to work everyday wanting to find solutions with the rest of the team despite his lackluster performance.

Brawn is hoping that Michael will be able to surpass his difficulties with the new Bridgestone tires. Hopefully next season, things will be much more manageable for the seven-time world champion once the team changes to Pirellis. Michael is the sort of driver who puts a lot of credit on his front tires to handle his hard braking and maneuvering skills.

Mercedes-Benz UK teams up with The Food Bank at Milton Keynes

Have a heart for the poor? Donate food items this October 1 and 2 at the Midsummer Place Shopping Center at Milton Keynes. Mercedes-Benz UK will be on site to support the food collection event dubbed The Food Bank.

The event is a basic system of collecting, organizing and distributing food donations to people who have been thrown off the economic ladder and living lives in poverty due to unfortunate events such as death in the family, sickness, over expenditure or even theft. The event is important because it makes up for lack of support or help from national government and social care infrastructure by giving out food until these agencies are able to come.

Mercedes-Benz started supporting the charity movement way back in December last year. It holds its own collections twice a year at their headquarters in Tongwell. Back in March, Mercedes-Benz used a Sprinter 311 CDI  to facilitate distribution of food items and reached as far the outskirts of Milton Keynes. Now, the company will once again use a Vito which will serve as a mobile collection point for The Food Bank. Mercedes-Benz UK will also be sending staff volunteers in the Vito to assist on October 1 and 2.

So if you’ve got a heart for the poor, spread the word. Or even better, be there at Milton Keynes with your own donations.

Tour de France 2011 sponsorship on its way

Mercedes-Benz is one of the few companies who pay attention to sports—whether it be tennis, motorsports, golf or cycling. The company’s latest efforts to reach out to sporting fans comes in the form of sponsorship—for a new Luxembourg-based cycling team for next year’s Tour de France season.

The company will be sponsoring vehicles for the team, which will be featuring brothers Andy and Frank Schleck. Surname ring any bell? Andy was able to finish second to Alberto Contador in Tour de France this year. Although Andy’s cohorts haven’t revealed their title sponsor, it’s pretty clear that Mercedes-Benz has chosen to sponsor the right team.

The partnership is part of Mercedes-Benz’s ‘The Best or Nothing’ brand philosophy, wherein the aim of the company is to provide vehicles for next year’s Tour de France champions, which will hopefully be Andy’s team, the Luxembourg Pro Cycling Project.

So what kind of vehicles can Andy and his band of merry cyclists expect? Well, probably specially adapted cars, minibuses, trucks and, of course, their very own fleet of team tour buses. Mercedes-Benz is one of the few companies that decided to invest sponsorship in Tour de France for next year, which include Nissan, Jaguar, and Skoda.

Four-cylinder turbodiesel in the S-Class? Not in the U.S.

You have to admit, if there’s one vehicle from Mercedes-Benz’s model lines that you’d dream about owning, it has got to be an S-Class. Being the flagship model of the German premium car manufacturer, it has packed everything from V12 monsters, stout V10′s and even twin-turbocharged V8′s. But now you’re going to see an S-Class with a four-banger diesel. So what gives?

Evolution happened. Mercedes-Benz was able to create a four-cylinder engine with enough wallop that it’s willing to risk its reputation by putting it on their most prestigious S-Class models. This is the first time in 60 years that something like this has ever happened. So this truly is a milestone for the company.

Here’s the deal. The engine is a 2.2-liter CDI turbocharged diesel that capable of delivering 369lb-ft torque at engine speeds as low as 1,600 rpm. Not only that—with such an impressive torque comes 204hp. Not much but the combination gives the S 250 CDI BlueEfficiency a 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds. Take note that it’s a diesel. Fuel economy is around 5.7 liters to a hundred kilometers, or roughly 41.2 miles per U.S. gallon as European tests have proven. CO2 emissions? 149g/km.

Mercedes-Benz has no plans whatsoever to release this variant in the US, though. So too bad.
