Mercedes is doing everything right at the moment. Its cars are almost at the point of being over-engineered again - which was never a disadvantage, but rather the exact reason why people bought them and kept them, not until they fell apart (MBs never fall apart), but until something better came along before selling them off to become third-world taxis. Build Quality is also right back where it used to be. And now something interesting seems to be happening with Mercedes styling. All the ingredients of success are falling into place. The only problem with all this is that, as good as the E-Class and S-Class are, we're all downsizing. So we really need a new A-Class and B-Class. I am sure we'll get super frugal diesel and petrol engines, and it would be nice to see a dual clutch gearbox for lesser models appear too. In particular, I am anticipating the next A-Class. I hope it will be a worthy Golf rival, if only to stop VW charging increasingly outrageous prices. That said, the Golf and A3 are so ubiquitous that I would welcome a similar size car that offered something different while being equally comfortable and dynamically good.
