Mercedes GP Petronas finishes 4th and 5th in Turkish Grand Prix

140 big Mercedes GP Petronas finishes 4th and 5th in Turkish Grand Prix

Despite starting out on the 5th and 6th grids, Mercedes GP Petronas finished a 4th-5th victory in the recently concluded Turkish Grand Prix at Istanbul Park today. It was a smooth, albeit quiet, race as both Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg were able to pull into their planned pit stops and still hold their positions ahead of their challengers.

As always, the weather played out pretty fairly for the team, as rain threatened to fall mid-race but only managed to score a few drops on the track. As if putting a curse on the Red Bull F1 Racing Team, those few drops managed to cause a collision between Sebastian Vettel and teammate Mark Webber, ruining the latter’s opportunity to score a hat trick victory. The crash opened up the chance for Michael to move up to fourth and for Nico to slide into fifth for the rest of the race.

Michael is quite glad he was able to keep the car in check despite tire temperatures dropping during a slow start. He was only able to hold off Jenson Button for a period, until the McLaren’s top-speed superiority took over.

Nico, on the other hand, was quite jovial about his successfully fast pit stops, albeit a bit dissatisfied, since his pace, although quicker than Michael’s, was limited by not being able to overtake and being wary of Robert Kubica who kept putting on pressure from behind.

New V8 on 2011 CLS to send shivers down your spine

New V8 Engine 13 610x367 597x359 New V8 on 2011 CLS to send shivers down your spine

Here’s more details on the much-awaited CLS. We’re all aware that Mercedes-Benz is phasing out its 5.5-liter V8 with replacements being built in Bad Canstatt. Well, guess what? There’s news saying that the latest V8, featuring direct injection and turbochargers, will make its debut on the 2011 model. How cool is that?

The latest CLS may be badged as the CLS460 Doppel-Kompressor, owing to the new 4.6-liter V8. Despite it being smaller than the previous V8 model, the new engine is no pushover. In fact, it’s even more powerful. Capable of delivering 429 hp and 516 lb-ft, it’ll do short work of the old V8 which only has 382 hp and 391 lb-ft in base form. And with the added power comes greater fuel economy – roughly around 20 percent of what the previous V8′s EPA rating.

In case you’re wondering, direct injection refers to the use of a fuel injector to ‘directly’ spray fuel into the combustion chamber. It’s like taking a syringe full of adrenaline and sticking the needle into your heart. It’s that deadly efficient. Couple that technology with a pair of turbochargers, and you’re looking at instantaneous power with a dab of your right foot. It’s also worth mentioning that MB tuned the twin-turbos for inexplicably low-rpm boost, meaning you’ll get all the torque your brain tissues can withstand as early as 1,600 rpm. Nasty.

Even though it’s designated for model year 2011, expect the latest CLS to debut as early as this year, probably around fall. Watch out.

S350 to be the only S-Class diesel in the States

The race for efficiency has every auto maker caught by the neck, and Mercedes-Benz is no exception. In its bid to keep up with the eco revolution, Daimler’s breadwinner has just announced plans for bringing into the US the European S350. It’ll pack a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel that’s capable of 241 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque, a bit raunchier than its 235 hp and 398 ft-lb European version. It’ll be the only diesel S-Class to be sold in the US, so hopefully it’ll gain some unique appeal amidst its gasoline-powered sisters.

Wearing a BlueTec badge, the US version of the S350 will feature AdBlue urea injection technology to cleanse its exhaust system. Power goes through the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, and should give you a little bit better mileage, anywhere from 37 miles per gallon as in the European version. EPA will probably score it around 20 mpg on the highway. Even though those numbers may mean little to you, they’re still a stark difference from the rest of the S-Class lineage. Those would include the S550, the S600 and the S400 Hybrid, which fetches around 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg out on the freeway.

Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? What else can you expect from a Mercedes-Benz diesel? You get plenty of torque despite the ‘limited’ horsepower compared to the rest of the gas-powered S-Class. And hey, remember it’s a diesel.

The Plus X Award for Innovation goes to… the SLS AMG!

The honors just keep piling up for Mercedes-Benz as the SLS AMG nets another top honor – a Plus X Award. Winning the High Quality and Design trophy under the Innovation category, the SLS was chosen by 144 judges from 32 participating nations who selected cars from all over the world for testing.

Mercedes-Benz’s parent company Daimler AG states that the SLS’ gullwing doors might have proved to be a huge factor during deliberation. Bringing back memories of the Fifties when its predecessor, the 300 SL, was highly regarded as a legendary race car, it’s no wonder that the SLS AMG appealed to the jury who are all avid fans of both luxury cars and motorsports.

The Plus X Award, perhaps the largest technology, sports and lifestyle contest, ranks nominees under six separate categories, namely Innovation, High Quality, Design, Ease of Use/Functionality, Ergonomics and Ecology. The SLS won the Innovation award sans rival due to its highly advanced systems – AMG’s 6.3-liter V8 engine that’s  mounted mid front and coupled to trans-axle, seven-speed double clutch transmission, and a body shell that’s made of spaceframe aluminum, all riding on a highly-tuned sports suspension system featuring double wishbone axles .

Performance wise, the V8 is capable of 571hp at 6,800 rpm with torque peaking at 650Nm around 4,750 rpm. With a price of 177,300 euros, the SLS AMG is one of the most affordable super cars you can ever imagine.
