The American environmental authority EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has put the smart fortwo at the top of its current list of the most economical cars without hybrid drive. The US authority confirms independent European studies that had already established the clever two-seater as the most economical car.
In addition, the two-seater already exceeds the US standards for fleet consumption (CAFE = Corporate Average Fuel Economy) which are planned for 2020 and it has already been classified as an ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV) in California. This of course is no surprise, as the European environmental agencies have established that years ago, but nevertheless, this is great news for smart.

Too bad smart will NEVER bring a smart car with micro hybrid drive technology, smart fortwo electric drive, or even the turbo gas, or diesel smart car to the USA!
All have way better mileage than the 2009 451.
All they will sell us is the most basic gasoline version.
I guess they don’t think we’re SMART enough!
Canada, SURE!
Europe, SURE!
USA, NO WAY!
Boo!

‘I guess they don’t think we’re SMART enough!’
No, there are simply no production capacities left…
While the 451 is powered by a Mitusbishi engine, the diesel is powered by a Mercedes made engine. And at European fuel prices near US$7 a gallon it’s the preferred power unit over there…
