The demand for the smart fortwo in the states is so strong, that some people have to wait up to 9 months for their vehicle – depending on the options they choose. Daimler knows about this problem, but according to an interview given to Auto-Motor-und-Sport by Zetsche, they aren’t rushing to increase supply to the states.

Dieter wants to first understand the sustainability of the current demand for the ultra compact fortwo before moving into increasing production or expanding capacity. However, Dieter did emphesize that “if the situation remains as it is or demand rises even further, we must consider it.” He also noted that “if we consider an expansion, I can imagine that North America would be an option.” I am not quite sure why the ever increasing gas prices, but also the growing “green movement”, is not a clear indication that small cars are part of the future, not only in Europe, but also in the States. Maybe Daimler is trying to go the ‘Nintendo Wii’ way, where shortages and waiting lists indicate strong demand for the product, making consumers want it even more; not being able to get something, makes people want it even more.

  1. Too bad smart will NEVER bring a smart car with micro hybrid drive technology, smart fortwo electric drive, or even the turbo gas, or diesel smart car to the USA!
All they will sell us is the most basic gasoline version.
I guess they don’t think we’re SMART enough!
    Canada, SURE!
    Europe, SURE!
    USA, NO WAY!
    Boo!
