I agree Mini. The current gasoline engines available in the C-Class and E-Class for North America have been around since the 2006 model year. Although this does not seem very long, they are not even direct injection. Audi, for example, has offered direct injection since the 2005 model year (or maybe longer). If Mercedes wants to keep up with the HP war and improve its mediocre fuel economy it has to roll out CGI soon.

Mercedes also looks like it will allow both Audi and BMW to steal its thunder on diesel. The 325d is coming soon, and the 2009 Audi A4 is coming with TDI. Mercedes invented this urea-injection technology and should offer it on ALL models as soon as possible.

As a Canadian myself, I think this momentum will likely to continue in the Canadian Market IF Mercedes were able to roll out the more gasoline efficient and diesel/hybrid models in the next 12-24 months.

Otherwise the rising gas prices and the volatile economy will worsen its sales. There are great mpg numbers coming out from the new GLK bluetec hybrid and the C class bluetec. Now if all of these can be translated into the 2009's then they are in good hands. The first step is to move the direct injection engines (CGI) out as soon as possible to replace the current ones.

When the new CLK, E and GLK comes out these changes in engine and efficiencies will help keep its numbers strong.

I also see room for the SMART brand to expand..maybe with a 4 seater or mini SUV cross over that can achieve the mpgs of current japanese hybrids and mini cars like the yaris and fit. Then Mercedes can really start stealing sales from those segments as well.
