DaimlerChrysler today began construction of its new plant for Mercedes-Benz vehicles at Chakan in Pune. The foundation stone of the new facility was laid by the Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Vilasrao Deshmukh together with Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Chairman of the Board of DaimlerChrysler India, Prof. Eberhard Haller, Member of the Board of DaimlerChrysler India and responsible for CKD plants of the Mercedes Car Group, and Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and CEO of DaimlerChrysler India in presence of further Indian Government Representatives.
In January 2007, DaimlerChrysler India had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Maharashtra to build the new plant at a 100-acre plot near an already existing plant. The new manufacturing facility will produce the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, E-Class and C-Class for the Indian market. Start of production is expected in early 2009. Over the next few years, DaimlerChrysler plans to invest around €50 Million Euros in connection with the new production facility. The new Chakan plant will initially employ around 350 workers, matching the level of the current facility.

The Mercedes Car Group delivered 384,600 Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and smart brand passenger vehicles worldwide in the first four months of 2007 (January-April 2006: 395,800). In April 2007, sales amounted to 97,800 units (April 2006: 100,800 units). The Mercedes-Benz brand achieved a new sales record for the period from January through April, with deliveries increasing by two percent to 365,000 units (January-April 2006: 357,300). In April 2007, 90,600 customers around the world chose to purchase a Mercedes-Benz model (April 2006: 91,300).

Some breaking news happend on Friday, which I was unfortuantely not able to post about. Mercedes officially released information on the new SLR convertible, that is very similar to the one we have seen a couple of weeks ago. Most of what I have writen then is true today, just that it has 9hp more than what I forcasted. To delight of many fans, the butterfly doors have stay, just as I have writen.

The maximum speed of the new high-performance sports car, which is powered by an AMG V8 compressor engine delivering 460 kW/626 hp, is 332 km/h, therefore at the same high level as the coupe. That is one important point because I initially was not in favor of a convertible, but this reasures everyone that the cabrio will be the same performance machine as the coupe.

The exclusive standard equipment includes semi-aniline-leather-upholstered carbon-fibre bucket seats which can be individually adapted to the driver and front passenger by means of differently sized seat pads; dual-zone automatic air-conditioning; a high-quality BOSE premium sound system; a multifunction sport steering wheel with gear-change paddles, and a navigation system with integral radio and CD player.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster, like the coupe, is produced at McLaren’s Formula 1 factory in Woking, England, in accordance with stringent Mercedes-Benz quality criteria and will be available as from September 2007.
